"Taste and See"
Since medieval and renaissance times, artists have used flowers with symbolism. The myrtle branches are for the folks converted to Christianity. The red carnations are the first flower of true love, and the sunflowers are one of the few flowers that follow the light so since this is a scripture of thanksgiving (attributed to David), we have angel wings that protect us and the love of God for which to be thankful. |

Scripture Ephesians 4: 1-16
Sermon
"Gifts of Love"
August 2, 2009
Wrapped in the theme of the trinity is unity. The 5 candles in the arrangement represent the gifts that Christ gives us: apostles, evangelists, prophets, pastors and teachers. The 5 candles also relate to the 5 wounds of Christ suffered on the cross. The star pattern of the candles represent the Nativity. so, through the candles we see the beginning and ending of Christs life on earth.
The 10 purple liatras are for the 10 commandments. 8 Cremon daisies are a symbol of regeneration. Interesting to note that baptismal fonts are 8-sided.
Willow is the symbol of the gospel. The white lily is Christ's flower. The entire arrangement forms a triangle for the Trinity.

Mark 5: 21-43
Sermon
"Healing Touch"
As Jesus walked among the crowds in Gerasenes, he encounters a wealthy man. The yellow roses represent the wealthy man and the daisies, the unclean nameless woman. As Jesus walks among the crowd, the woman, hoping to be cured of her illness, touches his robe (represented by the lavendar chrysanthemums). Jesus turns and says to her, "Daughter, your faith (the emerging blue delphiniums) has made you well, go in peace and be healed of your disease." The dark leaves surrounding the blue delphinium are the dark clouds parting to allow the blue sky to appear.

Below is the explanation from the florist of the meaning of the flowers.
You have 2 men: Saul who is King, and David who is annointed to be King. Both men are of equal strength. I have used the Sanseveria (snake plant) for Saul and his army with swords. I have used the strength of the coconut palm with attached coconut
because David will bear fruit as King. There are roses without heads to symbolize David cutting the Cloak of Saul.. |
